Beginners Guide to Becoming a Vegan

How hard is it and is it REALLY worth it?

I understand this post may not be for some are extremely offended by a plant based diet (which I can never wrap my head around.) BUT eating a wholesome clean diet does interest you I would hang around. I felt this was the perfect time to talk about he benefits I have seen from a plant based diet after the ever so popular Netflix original "What the Health"has taken our social media by storm. Yes. I did see the documentary but in all honesty..not my favorite. As a realist I thought it was very one sided towards a plant based diet which i enjoy, but putting the fear of death in to people, not exactly my favorite. While there are definitely some pushy vegans that give the lifestyle a bad wrap, I have experienced nothing but positivity and benefits since ditching the meat and cheese.

Some benefits from going plant based

  • CLEAR SKIN. Probably the best part of going vegan was that my skin looks and feels better than it ever has! It is the most amazing feeling to be comfortable enough to go 5 out of 7 days without makeup.

  • Energy for days! Since eating whole foods like vegetables, fruit, nuts, and whole grains I feel my energy lasting all day, the key here though is to eat enough! These foods are naturally low in calories so make sure to be eating enough to keep your body running!

  • Overall sense of positivity and clear mind. Since going vegan my mind is clear. I have no afternoon haze at work, no cloudy fatigue feeling. My mind is sharp and and my vision is clear. Not only does this physically feel amazing, but mentally I am more motivated and determined than I have ever been.

So yes I know all of those things sound amazing, and truly there are, but changing your lifestyle is not an easy thing to do. I am giving you all a few tips on how to approach a whole foods plant based life style.

1. Start small

While this is not in my genetic makeup to take baby steps (I am a dive in head first kind of girl) I would suggest cutting one thing out at a time. Start with dairy. It is the hardest by far to give up, not only because...cheese but dairy is also hidden in the ingredients of many foods. LEARN TO READ THE LABELS. There will always be a disclaimer that says "contains milk" if it includes any sort of dairy product. Dairy is a killer to our bodies, it is difficult to digest, it leaves us feeling lethargic, and breakouts can also be accredited to dairy. Once you have mastered the dairy free life go to the next step move on to meat. Something that I still do from time to time is indulge in some vegan cheese or meat. I don't do this often since these are still processed foods but as a beginner it is a great way to ease into it!

2. Have fun with your food!

I absolutely LOVE to cook, so for me this was an exciting way to create new recipes, try new foods, and experiment in the kitchen. I have been introduced to so many amazing new foods I never even knew existed (like jackfuit! my new obsession in life! read below to see some recipes.) Don't pay attention to what you "can't" eat focus on all the amazing things you CAN eat. And as for the ever so common "vegans can't eat at restaurants"...also false. There are tons of amazing dishes that are already vegan without it being plastered on the menu. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions at the restaurant, and if you have to play with the be it.

3. Stick with it

Like everything good in life, it takes time. Nothing will change over night, give it a few weeks, a month, a few months. You will be absolutely astonished with the amazing changes your body will go through. I know at least speaking for myself I have never felt better than when on a plant based diet. I have shared some recopies that I have made + love down below to inspire you to try something new in the kitchen!
