Salem City, NJ: Keep the Water Safe & in Public Hands

Published Aug 24, 2022
At their last meeting, Salem City Council members stated that it would still be a few weeks before the public had any additional information about the safety of their water. This delay in communication is unacceptable as residents are worried about whether the water is safe to drink due to elevated levels of PFNA and PFOS. The community needs to know what steps are being taken by their officials to address these violations! At the same meeting, City Council stated that a long-term fix to the aging water system would be complicated and expensive, and signaled their interest in a corporate takeover of the public water system. Even though alternatives are available, Council is already making moves to sell the system — without a public vote. Water privatization invariably results in rate hikes and decreased transparency. This would be a losing deal for the public! The community needs clear answers about the current status of their water and the future of their water system. **Join us on Thursday, 9/1 at 7 p.m. to discuss next steps to take together!**
